Ink, brush, paper and inkstone
Sumi-e begins with close attention to a small set of traditional tools. Jurga introduces how the ink is prepared, how water changes its tone and how an absorbent sheet records the speed and pressure of the brush.
A mark cannot be repeatedly corrected on rice paper. The workshop therefore builds confidence through simple exercises before moving toward leaves, flowers and other natural forms.
Prepare
Understand the tools, grind or dilute ink, test tonal values and learn how much moisture the paper can hold.
Practise
Explore pressure, speed, brush angle and loading through repeatable marks that connect movement to the image on the page.

Before your Sumi-e workshop
Are Jurga’s Sumi-e workshops suitable for beginners?
Yes. No previous ink-painting experience is needed. Jurga introduces the materials, brush loading and expressive marks step by step.
How many people can attend?
Private group workshops are arranged for five or more people. Public workshops can also be planned when at least five people are interested.
Where do Sumi-e workshops take place?
Workshops take place in London at a suitable venue agreed with the group. Jurga confirms the location and available dates before the booking is finalised.
Are Sumi-e materials included?
Yes. Ink, rice paper and the workshop materials are included, so beginners can experience the traditional tools before choosing their own.
Can Jurga run a workplace or company Sumi-e workshop?
