Your first watercolour class in London: what to expect and bring

A calm, practical guide to your first class with Jurga at Cass Art Kensington—from materials and demonstrations to feedback and what happens after booking.

A first watercolour class should give you a clear place to begin—not a test of what you already know. Jurga’s Thursday classes at Cass Art Kensington welcome complete beginners, returning painters and people with an established practice.

The group is small, materials are included and the lesson moves from a demonstration into supported painting time. You can arrive without buying a kit or preparing a finished idea.

What happens during the class

Jurga introduces one practical focus, such as colour mixing, edges, tone, negative space or composition. She demonstrates how the water, pigment and brush behave before the group tries the idea.

You then work at your own pace. Jurga moves around the table and gives individual guidance, so a beginner can ask about a first wash while a more experienced painter develops a different question from the same exercise.

What you need to bring

Watercolour paints, brushes and paper are provided. You do not need to buy a full set before your first class. If you later want a home kit, the beginner materials guide explains a compact starting point.

  • Clothes you are comfortable painting in.
  • Reading glasses or another visual aid if you normally use one.
  • A phone or notebook if you want to record your own colour notes.
  • Curiosity and permission to make an imperfect page.

You will not be asked to copy one style

A demonstration provides a sequence, not a prescribed finished painting. Jurga helps you understand why a wash spread, where a composition needs space or how one edge could become quieter. The aim is to build control while keeping your own way of seeing.

Some exercises produce a finished study; others remain experiments. Both are useful. Watercolour becomes easier when every page is not expected to prove something.

How booking works

Weekly classes run on Thursdays from 5–6.30pm at Cass Art Kensington, 220 Kensington High Street, London W8 7RG. A single class is £35 and a five-class pass is £150. After secure checkout, Jurga confirms your preferred Thursday by email.

If you want one-to-one tuition or a private small-group session, send two possible dates and a short note about your experience or project. Jurga will check availability and recommend the right format.

A useful first-class mindset

  • Watch the demonstration before deciding whether you can do it.
  • Ask one specific question at a time.
  • Let a wash dry before trying to repair it.
  • Notice one thing that worked as well as one thing to practise.

Studio noteYour first class is a beginning. One confident wash or one better observation is enough progress for an evening.
